The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail--2

After reading the play...

From the many meaningful sentences, witty maxims, and quotable declarations, which one(s) moved you to think in a way you hadn't thought before? Why?

Many of the remarks in this play have sparked attention. It's hard to pick just a few. I think the way it was written expresses witt and promoting. The entire time I was reading, things were sparked in my mind. I like this play. It makes me think.

I don't think i could pick any specific quotes because the entire book made me think in a new way. The entire book was about learning in a new way. Henry and David both think outside the box and try to teach outside of a classroom. The entire thing grabbed my attention and made me wonder how it would be to learn like that.

there were a lot to choose from that moved me, its difficult to pick one or remember any of them, but it was interesting how the guy locked up was teaching in jail. it was wierd to me how the scene just changed a lot from inside the jail to an open field or someone's place; it didnt occur to me that it was just flashbacks.

I would have to agree with Courtney because they did teach in the ways your not used to. I like the way they teach. And I think its better because it keeps you on your toes to keep you focused. I wish that my teachers would teach like that more often

page 25, Henry says "Nobody can teach anybody anything."

I read that line and the truth of it hit me like lightning. No one can teach me, I have to teach myself. Sure a teacher can give me knowledge, but i have to decide what i am going to do with it. I am my own teacher. Just as you are your own teacher. Everyone takes it upon themsleves to learn. You can sit in an Algebra class, and pay attention, and pass all the tests, but unless you have passion for that subject, none of it is going to last.

I think, in a way, I have always thought the way Thoreau thinks. I don't really have an "identity" yet, but i know that when mine has fully developed, a lot of his ideas will be incorporated into my own. I agree with a lot of what his thoughts. Especially being my own teacher.

There are many quotes that spoke to me in this play, but the main one is written on page fifteen when Thoreau is conversing with Bailey.

"Fire inside burns hotter than fire outside. A man's conviction is stronger than a flame or a bullet or a rock."

This quote speaks to me because it makes me realize more than ever that the determination, integrity, and hunger inside of myself can make so many things happen and so many doors open. it shows that once you have an idea that is smart and works no one can stop you but yourself. This quote motivated me to stay headstrong and never let anybody break my mind.

I agree with Makayla. I read that line and it just clicked with me. This quotation also reminds of a similar one that Mrs. DeSarro has in her room. I think it reads something along the lines of: "I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think." I believe it was Socrates or another ancient philosopher who said this. Anyway, I really like the way Henry thinks. He seems so sure of himself and what he believes in, which I really admire.

Well, in my opinion.. i agree with most of the other kids, its hard to pick just one. And I dont actually remember just one that stuck out in my mind. But i like the way the book makes me think and the way thoreau explains and questions everything people say and whats going on. it makes the book interesting.

Picking a certain quote is hard, the book itself had me thinking anew. The book kept my attention and kept my mind constantly thinking in different ways.

Throughout the entire play, things grabbed my attention and made me thing. I wouldn't be able to narrow it down to just one specific example. Each one brought a new way of thinking into my life, and it was innovating to wrap my mind around.

Devin Oulds,
Sorry to hop on the ban-wagon but i also agree with must of my peers that the book is filled with quotes that caught my attention. While i was reading the book it kept me on my toes the whole time. It was so suspenseful. It was hard to stop. But the story opened my eyes to a new learning experience which i would love to try!
